KUCHING: She was just 17, but SMK Taee fifth former Eisner Nala Jackson did not let her young age and lack of experience hold her back as she went on to win the first ‘Pertandingan Bintang Lagu Klasik Iban’ (PBLKI) held Friday night.
She scored high points among the judges with her huge vocals and strong stage presence when rendering two Iban classics namely ‘Tekenangka Nuan’ and ‘Sera Nyawa’. As reward for her success, the science stream student brought home RM2,500, a trophy and hamper.
An ecstatic Eisner when met after the prize presentation said it was the biggest competition she had won thus far and she dedicated the win to her family especially her mother, Carolina and her brother, Leo, who had been very supportive.
“I was only champion at school level when I was at SMK Pakan in 2008, competing in Irama Malaysia singing competition. Later, I finished fourth at the Sarikei division level. So, tonight’s victory is the biggest for me,” she said.
According to her again, it was also the first time she had to sing with a live band for a competition. “Previously, I only sang ‘minus-one’ songs,” she said.
She also said she was interested to record an album, although she was currently more interested to pursue her dream to become a human resource director.
“Although I am young, I like to listen to Iban classics. It started because my mother always switched on the radio in the morning when the classic songs are usually played. My mother is also a talented singer, but not a recording artiste,” said Eisner, the youngest of six siblings.
As an Iban (father from Betong, mother from Sri Aman), Eisner said she also would want to play a part to bring up the Iban music industry to a higher level.
Meanwhile, in second place was Flerdarus Udin, 26, and third was another 17-year-old, Rina Bayu Adilana. They brought home RM2,000 and RM1,500 respectively, as well as trophies and hampers.
The top three winners also landed themselves contracts to record album with OCS Studios.
The other five finalists Valerie Thiam, Pauline Arah, Suhaini Mat, Philip Johnny and Lawrence E, were rewarded with consolation prizes of RM300 each, a trophy and a certificate. Pauline was RM500 richer after she won the Best Performance award.
Prizes were presented by Minister of Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan, who is also Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) president.
In his short speech, Mawan said such competition was a good way to usher in the Gawai festive spirit.
Dayak Arts and Culture Promoters Association Kuching chairman Mervyn Tajem, in his speech, said the competition was organised by PPSKDK with the objective to promote the Iban language and also to revive interest in its classic songs.
He was happy to note the competition reflected the 1Malaysia spirit, because there were two Malays, one Bidayuh-Iban and one Chinese-Bidayuh among the eight finalists.
“There are more of such activities in the pipeline once the resources are available,” he said, adding that the association was officially registered on Feb 17 this year.
The Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo were the official media for the competition, which started off with 74 participants for the audition on April 28.
